Built in 1858 for $9,600, the Historic Dawson County Courthouse stands as the oldest operational courthouse in the state of Georgia. Constructed just a year after Dawson County was established in 1857, the courthouse quickly became the heart of civic life—hosting court proceedings, public gatherings, and community events that shaped the county’s early years.
Designed in a simple yet enduring architectural style, the building reflects the craftsmanship and practicality of mid-19th-century Georgia. Through the Civil War, Reconstruction, and decades of growth and change, the courthouse remained a steadfast presence in downtown Dawsonville.
Today, the Historic Dawson County Courthouse has been thoughtfully preserved and repurposed as a cultural and community landmark. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it now welcomes visitors and is home to the Dawson County Historical and Genealogical Society, County offices and operating Courtroom.
